America the Beautiful silver coins are the largest silver bullion coins ever produced by the United States Mint. These five-ounce silver coins are minted in investment-grade, .999 pure silver. Their purity, weight, and silver content is guaranteed by the U.S. government. This is one of the most popular silver bullion coin series ever released.
America the Beautiful silver bullion coins mirror the design of the America’s Beautiful National Parks series of quarters, albeit on a much larger scale. Replicating the design found on each of the quarters, the obverse depicts George Washington. Meanwhile, the reverse features a national park or other national site.
The coins will include one site in every state, issued in the order in which the site was established. Each design is nearly identical to the design found on the corresponding quarter-dollar coin. One major difference between the circulating quarters and the silver coin series is the edge. While circulating quarters have a reeded edge, the edge of these silver bullion coins is smooth, and is marked with the weight and fineness of the coin.
These silver coins are much larger than circulating quarters. Regular quarters weigh approximately 0.2 troy ounce, while each silver coin contains five ounces of .999 fine silver bullion. These bullion coins measure approximately three inches in diameter, making them the largest silver coins ever minted by the U.S. Mint.
The series began in 2010, with a coin depicting Hot Springs National Park in Arkansas. Five new coins are released each year, and the previous year’s coins are no longer minted. It is hoped that investors will seek out each coin to complete the series, which is scheduled to run through 2021.
In all, there will be 56 quarters and 56 matching silver bullion coins produced, one for each state, the District of Columbia, and all five U.S. Territories. Between 100,000 and 500,000 of these coins are minted each year, with production split approximately evenly across the five yearly issues. Already, early issues have long been out of stock, and are now highly sought after by collectors and silver investors.
In addition to the standard silver bullion coins, the U.S. Mint has also released uncirculated versions of the same designs. These numismatic collectibles feature a mirror finish and are encapsulated in a plastic case prior to being sold. The uncirculated coins are produced in limited numbers, and are intended for coin collectors.
Though each America the Beautiful silver coin carries a face value of one quarter – like their circulation counterparts – the actual value of these silver bullion coins is far higher due to the value of the metal they contain. New America the Beautiful silver coins sell for the price of silver, plus a premium to cover production costs. Early issues are expected to increase in value due to their rarity and collectible nature. Because each coin features a beautiful design depicting one of the nation’s most treasured places, they have been immensely popular with coin collectors and silver investors.
